The Transparent Wall とうめいなかべ

The humans Towa captures are mass of flesh. Nothing more and nothing less than organic matter. They are not humans who confront each other ideologically. That which should be between their physical bodies, isn’t.

永遠が撮る人間は皮膚の塊である。
有機物、
それ以上でもそれ以下でもない。
イデオロギーを持つ人間同士の対峙ではない。
異なる身体の間に
あるはずの何か がない。

But this doesn’t mean that photographs are apathetic, and neither is Towa.

Some years ago when she took photos of me, I remember her spontaneously giving directions to my body how to move:
”Raise your chins a bit more.”
”Put the fingers slightly to the front!”

Meanwhile, she giggled like a child who saw a strange toy for the first time,
not knowing she does not know
and exploring how the alien object can move.

Her eyes, her voice, were clearly illuminated.

While she stared at my back full of moles, spots, and an operation scar, I will never forget her whisper,

“It’s cosmic“

でも、撮影行為自体が冷たいわけではない。

以前撮影してもらった時
「もう少し顎を下げて」
「指もうちょっとこっち」
と私の身体がどう動くか面白がりながら撮っていたのを思い出す。
小さな子どもが初めて見るおもちゃを目の前に
知らないことを知らないままあれこれ動かしてみるような。
その目は、声は、明らかに輝いていた。

手術跡やしみ・ほくろだらけの背中を
「宇宙みたい」と言ったのが忘れられない。

Between Towa and the subject stands a transparent wall.
Not for separation, but to find something to share, knowing they are different existence of life.

The purity of her gaze toward someone who is not me is no different from when gazing at the shadows on the sands, the flowing grasses, the swaying waves.

永遠と被写体の間にはとうめいなかべがある。
隔てるためでなく、
相手と自分は別の存在なことを
分かっていながら近づくための。

[私]でない[他者]への純粋なまなざしは
砂浜の影を、そよぐ草原を、ゆらめく水面を
見つめるそれと同じ。
