歩いていると、道々に広がる様々な「痕跡」によく出会う
それらが私には目に視えぬ生を保有しているように感じる
When I walk outside,
I encounter all sorts of “scars“ in the streets
To me, it seems as if they are embracing invisible life
それはゆらめいていておぼろげで
They flicker
They are vague
触れないヴィジョンの
水上で舞踏をするように
手にすくった水を
こぼれないようにするみたいに
Like an untouchable vision

Notes from Seen Scenes
松田翔吾は1993年高知県出身、現在東京を拠点に制作しているアーティストです。空間デザインを学ぶ専門学校でドローイングの機会に触れ、そこで初めて芸術表現に目覚め抽象画制作を開始した松田は、2016年頃より独学でデッサン等の技術習得を試みはじめました。現在は水彩と線画表現を中心に作品制作を行なっています。
松田は、日常にある汚れ・形骸・傷といった事象が、実在している瞬間そのものを保有する点に強く惹かれていると言います。日常の記憶から得たニュアンスを画面上に再現し、構築と破壊、意識と無意識を往来しながら、画面上に発生した関係性を起点としてさらに制作は進みます。これらは絵具の痕跡、あるいは記号性の強い人間の身体の線、その偶発的な接続を生み出すと同時に、作家が世界に触れ「実在すること」を探求した記録としてあらわれます。近現代の思想や芸術からの影響は明白ながら、専門的な美術教育を経由しなかったゆえに際立つ表現の純粋性、対峙の姿勢がそこには感じられます。
問いも答えも持たずに出発し、時間や意識、絵画表現と戯れながら形をあらわす松田の作品には、鑑賞者それぞれが個人的な記憶や感情を重ねうるでしょう。しかし世界は偶然が複雑に絡み合っているに過ぎず、そこに物語や意味を見出そうとするのが人間の性であることを暗にほのめかすかのようです。なぜ身体が記号として扱われるのか、その源泉は何なのか。現時点では、作家でさえ自身の表現について明確な答えを持たないところが多くあり、自身の視覚言語を確立する過程で未知数の可能性を孕んでいると言えます。

Shogo Matsuda, born in Kochi in 1993, is an artist based in Tokyo. After finding his passion for drawing during a foundation class at a school for interior design, he began to draw abstract paintings. From 2016, he started to teach himself new and challenging drawing techniques, now at the stage of producing pieces through merging drawings of the human body and abstractness.
To Matsuda, stains, ruins, or any remains found in everyday life are deeply intriguing because they embrace the moment of their own existence. He lets the nuance he received from his memories reemerge upon the canvas, cycling between construction and deconstruction, consciousness and unconsciousness —He proceeds as he finds the relationships that emerge in his drawings, letting them be the cardinal points. These traces of pigment, and also the lines of the human body evoking highly symbolic meanings, are at once arbitrary connections that form with one another while serving as a record of Shogo's pursuit of existence in itself.. While Matsuda is clearly influenced by modern philosophy and art, his confrontational approach to artistic expression can be felt from the genuineness of his practice as a self-taught artist without academic training.
When seeing Matsuda's works, which plays with artistic expression, time and consciousness without any question in mind or any answer to be explored, viewers may find themselves imposing their personal memories or feelings on them. Nonetheless, with the world presented being nothing more than an intertwinement of arbitrary complexity, the paintings seem to insinuate that the very drive to find meaning or develop stories is merely a part of human nature. Why is the body used for symbols? Where did the idea come from? As of now, even the artist himself does not answer many of the questions imposed by his artistic practice; for Matsuda, there are countless possibilities still to be explored in the process of establishing his visual language.
